The Louise R. Lester Spay/Neuter Clinic is seeking a dynamic, mission-minded, shelter veterinarian to bring compassion and surgical expertise to our community pet clinic. The clinic is an arm of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, a non-profit, no-kill shelter in its 50th year of operation, dedicated to rescuing, rehabbing and rehoming pets. Our mission is to provide competent and affordable spay/neuter surgery and wellness care to both SPCA animals and community pets. We strive to reduce pet overpopulation in our community, while educating the public as to the importance of humane treatment and preventative medical care for their family pets.
Services provided include spay/neuter surgery and wellness care for SPCA animals and community pets. All services provided to the public are offered at a discounted price to families experiencing financial challenges. Our clinic, opened in 2021, has a variety of state-of-the-art equipment including a VetScan VS2 Chemistry analyzer, Bionet BM3Vet Elite monitor, a new Sound SmartDR digital radiography system, Sound digital dental x-ray as well as GE ultrasound. This position allows the Veterinarian the freedom to practice medicine as they see fit for their patients. The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in shelter medicine, experience with high-volume spay-neuter, and possess strong medical, surgical, as well as interpersonal skills
Job Specifics:
- Full-time position which can be worked as four 10- hour days or five 8- hour days
- Availability to work one Saturday (half-day) per month for community wellness clinic
- You must be able to operate within our core values
- Must thrive independently in a fast-paced, and dynamic environment
- Ability to oversee, diagnose and treat the medical needs of SPCA animals
- Help develop and manage preventative shelter medicine and disease protocols
- Ability to perform on average, 15-20+ spay/neuter surgeries per day including the possibility of in-heat, pregnant, cryptorchid and pediatric animals. (public, feral/community cats & SPCA animals).
- Ability to perform minor surgeries for the SPCA animals such as dentals, amputations, enucleations, mass removals, etc.
- Active license to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia or ability to obtain
- USDA accredited veterinarian (in Virginia) or ability to obtain accreditation
- Ability to obtain a DEA license and manage record keeping of controlled substances
- 1-2 years of spay/neuter experience preferred, but not required.
